New Delhi, Apr 11 (KNS) : The Congress Working Committee (CWC) condemned the government's move to bring amendments to the Women's Reservation Bill, calling the process "unilateral and opaque" while accusing the ruling dispensation of using the proposed legislation as a political tool ahead of state polls.
Meeting at Indira Bhawan in the national capital, the CWC said that while the party has historically championed the 33 per cent quota and was the first to introduce and pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha in 2013, the current government's approach raises "serious alarms."
In a strong-worded resolution, the CWC flagged that rushing a delimitation exercise alongside the Bill could have dangerous consequences for the democratic balance of states, particularly in the South and Northeast.

"The government had originally delayed implementation until after the Census. Now, a special session is being used for political mileage with an eye on delimitation before the 2029 general election," senior Congress leaders said during the meeting.
The party reiterated its firm commitment to one-third reservation for women but insisted that the measure must be "inclusive and fair."
"The Amendment Bill should not be a political tool that undermines federalism and vitiates the vitality of Parliament as a deliberative body," the CWC said, while demanding wider consultations with Opposition parties before any legislative push. (KNS)
