First Batch of Amarnath Yatra Pilgrims Arrives in Qazigund

Qazigund, June 30 (KNS) : The annual Amarnath Yatra commenced today with great fervor as the first batch of 3488 pilgrims reached Qazigund in Kulgam District of South Kashmir's Kulgam district, marking the beginning of AmarnathYatra. 


Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, along with Deputy Inspector General of Police south Kashmir Rayees Mohammad Bhat, Superintendent of Police Kulgam Sahil Sarangal, and members of the local PRI, gathered near Nayvuga tunnel to extend a warm welcome to the first batch of pilgrims. 

An official told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that to cater to the lodging and food requirements of the pilgrims, the authorities have set up transit camps with a capacity of 5000 at Walnut factory in Qazigund and FCI Mirbazar. 

He said that these camps include a 2400-bedded Yatri Niwas at Walnut factory Qazigund and a 2600-bedded facility at FCI Mirbazar. The increased lodging capacity along the Yatra route will ensure a convenient and comfortable stay for the pilgrims, he said. 

Earlier, under tight security arrangements, the first batch of pilgrims embarked on their journey from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu towards the two base camps in Kashmir. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, flagged off the convoy consisting of 164 vehicles carrying 3488 pilgrims. This moment marked the official commencement of the pilgrimage.

A top security official said that in preparation for the yatra, security forces, paramilitary forces, police, and other security agencies conducted a comprehensive mock drill to ensure the highest level of security and preparedness. 

With the arrival of the first batch of pilgrims in Qazigund and the commencement of the yatra from Jammu, the administration, along with security forces, will continue to provide essential facilities, medical aid, and a secure environment for the pilgrims, he added.(KNS)
