Srinagar, Dec 16 (KNS): Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has directed the authorities to be prepared for impending snowfall in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
The meteorological department has reported that a western disturbance is expected to impact the region on Saturday, with the potential for light rain or snow in the elevated areas over the following two days.
LG Manoj Sinha, acknowledging the forecast, has instructed relevant authorities to take necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors during the anticipated weather conditions.
Mechanical department officials informed news agency KNS that the efforts were underway to enhance snow-clearing equipment, emergency services, and other preparedness measures to minimize the impact of any adverse weather conditions.
“Residents and tourists are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and adhere to safety guidelines during the expected snowfall. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond swiftly to any challenges posed by the changing weather patterns in the region,” officials added.
According to reports, Gulmarg, the picturesque town nestled in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, was experiencing snowfall on Saturday.
The snowfall adds to the charm of Gulmarg, attracting tourists and locals alike to witness the transformation of the landscape into a serene and enchanting snowy vista.
Meanwhile Mughal Road, linking Kashmir Valley's Shopian district with the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch, shut down on Saturday due to recent snowfall.
Fresh snowfall, particularly at various points along the road, including 'Pir Ki Gali,' prompted the closure of this vital route, officials said.
Cold wave conditions have witnessed improvement in north and central Kashmir due to cloud cover, although the mercury has dropped in south Kashmir areas overnight.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius on Friday night, marking a slight increase compared to the previous nights minus 3.5 degrees Celsius.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district experienced a minimum temperature of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius. The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Other areas reported varying temperatures, with Qazigund at minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, Kokernag town at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius.
Officials from the meteorological department highlighted that a weak western disturbance is expected to impact Jammu and Kashmir between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
“Under its influence, light rain or snow is anticipated in several places, especially over higher elevations. Notably, light snowfall is expected in popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez Valley, and along the Mughal Road”.
The meteorological department also projected an improvement in minimum temperatures due to the feeble western disturbance until Sunday. However, authorities caution that night temperatures are likely to fall again by 1-3 degrees after the weekend. (KNS)
