Srinagar June 15 (KNS): Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has raised serious concerns about the growing health and environmental crisis caused by the Achan garbage landfill in Srinagar.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said that the terrible smell from the landfill is spreading across the city and making life very difficult for people living nearby.
According to data shared with him by RTI activist Raja Muzaffar, more than 11 lakh (1.1 million) metric tonnes of old garbage are lying at the site, and 550 tonnes of fresh waste are dumped there every day. Residents have reported an increase in respiratory and skin problems due to the pollution.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Mirwaiz said that even though he lives far from Achan, he can still smell the stench, especially in the evenings. He added that local residents and community members have visited him, asking for help and urging him to raise the issue during Friday prayers at Jama Masjid — which he plans to do.
He appealed to the authorities, including the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), to take immediate action. “Before making Srinagar a smart city, can’t it at least be made stench-free and liveable?” he added.(KNS)
