Earlier, political parties, including the ruling National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and J&K Apni Party (JKAP), had called for the resumption of the official ceremony to mark July 13 as Martyrs’ Day.

This event had been suspended by the Lieutenant Governor during the period when the Union Territory was under direct Central administration.

Since the National Conference-led elected government assumed office in October last year, it has taken steps to restore certain practices.

The government had written to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha requesting the reinstatement of July 13 and December 5—birth anniversary of NC founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah—as official holidays.

However, the Srinagar Police confirmed that all permissions for gatherings at Khawaja Bazar on July 13 have now been denied.(KNS).
