Srinagar, Dec 21 (KNS): As the GST Council convened its 55th meeting in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, under the leadership of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) President Altaf Bukhari made a fervent appeal to the Council to reject the proposed GST hike of up to 28% on textiles.
Highlighting the potential impact of the hike, Bukhari expressed deep concern over the adverse effects it would have on traditional Kashmiri textiles, including shawls, crewel work, and other handcrafted items. He emphasized that such a move would severely harm the businesses of these unique crafts and jeopardize the livelihoods of countless artisans who depend on this sector.
Bukhari pointed out that the GST Council had demonstrated its support for traditional crafts and artisans in 2018 by reducing the tax on handmade carpets and similar items from 12% to 5%.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe urged the Council to exhibit the same spirit of compassion and magnanimity by rejecting the proposed hike.
