American Association for Cancer Research Recognises Kashmiri Researcher with Prestigious Global Scholar-in-Training Award

Srinagar February 13 (KNS): Umer Majeed Khaja, a dedicated researcher from Jammu and Kashmir, has achieved a significant milestone in his academic journey. Affiliated with Lovely Professional University, Punjab, and the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University of Kashmir, Umer has been awarded the highly competitive Global Scholar-in-Training Award (GSITA) by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

This esteemed accolade recognizes Umer Majeed Khajas exceptional contributions to cancer research, marking him as one of the 15 global recipients chosen from a rigorous selection process that saw over 100 applicants worldwide. His selection underscores not only the scientific rigor of his work but also his potential to influence the field of cancer research on a global scale.

Notably, only two researchers from India have been selected for this prestigious award in 2025—Umer Majeed Khaja from Lovely Professional University and another researcher from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi—further highlighting the significance and competitiveness of this recognition.

The GSITA includes full financial support for Umer to attend the AACR Annual Meeting 2025 in Chicago, USA, from April 25 to April 30. This premier scientific gathering provides a platform for Umer to present his findings, engage with leading experts, and explore the forefront of cancer research.

As the sole recipient from Jammu and Kashmir, Umer Majeed Khaja;s achievement is a testament to the regions emerging scientific prowess. It highlights the untapped potential and resilience of researchers from regions often underrepresented in global scientific discourse.

Umer conducted his PhD research under the supervision of Dr. Reena Singh at Lovely Professional University, Punjab, and was co-supervised by Dr. Showkat Ahmad Ganie at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, University of Kashmir. Umer’s PhD research focused on colorectal cancer, where he investigated the chemopreventive potential of Rheum webbianum rhizome extracts against 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in Swiss albino rats. His work involved the successful development of an in- vivo colorectal cancer model, contributing valuable insights into cancer biology and potential therapeutic approaches.

Beyond his research, Umer has published extensively in reputed international journals and serves as a peer reviewer for various global scientific publications. He is also actively involved in spreading cancer awareness in the Kashmir region by writing informative columns to educate the public on cancer prevention and research advancements. His dedication to both scientific discovery and public health underscores his commitment to making a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.
