Moscow, Dec 11 (KNS): Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who recently sought asylum in Russia, is now secure and will not be extradited, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.
"In such a situation, it would be very wrong for me to elaborate on what happened and how it was resolved, but he is secured," Ryabkov said, as reported by the local RIA news agency.
Addressing the possibility of extradition, Ryabkov emphasized that Russia is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC) Rome Statute, according to Xinhua news agency.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Al-Assad's government collapsed on Sunday following a rapid offensive by militant groups from northern Syria. The offensive, which began in late November, led to the capture of Damascus within 12 days, prompting al-Assad to resign and seek refuge in Russia. (KNS)
