Basharat Bukhari Demands Compensation for Indus Water Treaty

Srinagar, Aug 06 (KNS): People's Democratic Party Senior Leader Basharat Bukhari on Tuesday demanded the compensation for indus water treaty.

Addressing a press conference, Bukhari strongly reiterated the long-standing demand for compensation under the Indus Water Treaty.

He highlighted the severe injustice faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir due to the pending compensation for over 70 years.

The Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan, allocates the waters of the Indus River system between the two countries. The treaty has specific implications for Jammu and Kashmir, as significant water resources originate and flow through the region. For over 70 years, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been deprived of their rightful compensation as per the treaty's terms. The delay has significantly impacted the region's economic and social development.

While speaking to KNS Bukhari emphasized the need for immediate action from the Government of India to address this historical injustice. He stated that providing compensation is essential for the larger good of the state and its people, ensuring a just and equitable resolution.

In addition to the demands for the Indus Water Treaty compensation, Bukhari also addressed a recent media misinterpretation of his comments regarding Article 370 & 35 A.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

During the press conference, Bukhari made a reference to the special status enjoyed by various states in India under Article 371. His remarks got misconstrued as a demand for Article 371 status for Jammu and Kashmir.

Bukhari's expressed a perspective in context of how several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and others, benefit from special provisions under the Indian Constitution.

It was not a demand for similar status for Jammu and Kashmir but an illustration of how special provisions can benefit regional development. The reference was to highlight the disparity in how different regions are treated and to emphasize the need for fair and just policies that address the unique needs of Jammu and Kashmir and its way forward was enshrined in the constitution of India under article 370 & 35 A.

The JKPDP remains committed towards its demand of restoration of pre 5th August 2019 position as the bare minimum to restart a process of reconciliation and dialogue with the people of J&K.(KNS)
