New Delhi, Nov 7 (KNS): The BJP has slammed the recent resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, which seeks the restoration of the region’s special status under Article 370, calling it an "attempt to divide India."
BJP spokesperson Smriti Irani accused the INDIA bloc parties, including the National Conference (NC) and its allies, of betraying national unity and disregarding both Parliament and the Supreme Court’s decision to revoke the article.
At a press conference on Thursday, Irani argued that the resolution, passed by the NC-led government, amounts to "disregard and insult" of the legislative and judicial decisions made on Article 370. She alleged that the INDIA bloc’s support for the resolution reflects "tactical support" for extremism and terrorism, implying that the alliance is not focused on Jammu and Kashmir’s development but rather on "divisive" politics. "The government elected through the democratic framework is giving evidence of breaking India instead of working on development issues and uniting India," Irani declared at the BJP headquarters.
The resolution, passed on Wednesday in the J&K Assembly, urged the central government to engage in dialogue with the state’s elected representatives to reconsider the special status of the erstwhile state. The Congress, which had partnered with the NC for recent elections, is not formally part of the ruling coalition but has faced backlash over its perceived alignment with the resolution.
Irani emphasized the BJP’s stance that the revocation of Article 370 will not be reversed, asserting that the article’s abrogation has led to a significant reduction in violence and terror activities in J&K.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelShe highlighted statistics, claiming terror incidents have declined by 70 percent and deaths in such incidents have dropped by 80 percent since the abrogation.
Irani challenged the Congress-led alliance to clarify its position, asking whether it stands against the economic and constitutional gains made in J&K since Article 370 was repealed. "What they seek is special status for themselves, not the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Irani argued, accusing the Congress of opposing the constitutional rights now available to marginalized communities, such as tribal populations, Dalits, OBCs, women, and children, since Article 370’s removal.
Tensions escalated in the J&K Assembly on Thursday, as BJP members protested against the resolution, leading to three party MLAs being ejected on the orders of Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather. Irani reacted sharply, saying, "Today, I stand as an Indian citizen outraged at the attempt by the Congress-led INDIA alliance to bring to the floor of the House a resolution that stands against the Indian Constitution and the Supreme Court’s opinion. I am joined in my outrage by the people of India and the 'karyakartas' of the BJP."
The senior BJP leader also issued a direct challenge to the Congress leadership, particularly the Gandhi family, questioning whether they support terrorism and oppose Jammu and Kashmir’s development. "Do they stand for the breaking of India rather than abiding by the Constitution?" she asked. She also questioned Congress-led governments in states like Jharkhand and Maharashtra, asking if they support the armed forces’ efforts to maintain peace and protect the nation. (KNS)
