Says youth must create new farming jobs and opportunities instead of only seeking employment elsewhere
Srinagar, July 4(KNS): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that agriculture remains central to the economy, identity, and culture of Jammu and Kashmir. He was speaking at the 6th Convocation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) held at the Shalimar Convention Centre in Srinagar.
He said the institution reflects the vision of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, which is seen today in its labs, lecture halls, and research stations. He added that SCOSS has led research in temperate horticulture, high-altitude farming, animal husbandry, and organic practices.
“This university is not just producing graduates, it is producing grassroots problem solvers,” Abdullah said.
He told the gathering that over 70% of the region’s population is directly or indirectly linked to agriculture. He added that the sector faces new challenges — climate change, land degradation, market uncertainty, and the rising expectations of the youth.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
He said the government has launched data-driven programs to meet these challenges. Referring to the Holistic Agriculture Development Program, he said an investment of over ?5,000 crore is being used to connect science, finance, and governance. He said projects include precision farming, dairy modernization, and post-harvest processing.
Abdullah said 29 projects are being supported, including walnut plantations, saffron revival, and sheep husbandry. “Graduates of SCOSS, this is your field,” he said.
He said the government is supporting hundreds of start-ups in agri-tech, food processing, and dairy. “If you have an idea, we’ll fund it. If you have the courage, we will create a platform.”
He urged graduates to stay connected to their roots and serve society. “Build agri-enterprises, digitize services, and help others rise as you rise,” he said. “Carry J&K in your heart — wherever you go.”(KNS).
