Madurai April 03 (KNS): CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat on Thursday strongly opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, calling it an "attack on the Constitution" and pledged to challenge it through all possible avenues.
Speaking at a press conference during the party’s 24th congress, Karat argued that if the issue was about Waqf Board reforms, the government should have engaged with the Muslim community instead of imposing unilateral changes.
"The BJP is bulldozing the rights of Muslims. While they may use their majority to pass this bill, we will fight it at every level," she said, adding that the CPI(M) views Hindutva politics as closely tied to corporate interests and oppression of minorities.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
When asked about Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s absence from the Lok Sabha during the debate and vote, Karat responded, “That question is for her to answer.”
Defending the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju maintained that it is aimed at improving Waqf property management through greater transparency and technology, not at targeting the Muslim community.
The Lok Sabha cleared the bill with a 288-232 majority after nearly 12 hours of debate.(KNS)
