Director SKIMS Urges Thyroid Screening in Newborns During World Thyroid Day Observance

Srinagar, June 5, (KNS):The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism, SKIMS, today organized a day-long awareness and educational program to mark World Thyroid Day, aimed at raising widespread awareness about various thyroid disorders.

Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS & EOSG, and one of the country’s leading endocrinologists, inaugurated the event. He emphasized the importance of maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle, expressing concern over increasing sedentary habits and excessive screen time, particularly among children. “These lifestyle factors significantly impact overall health,” he stated.

Prof. Ganie recommended that all pediatricians and gynecologists screen newborns for congenital hypothyroidism and pregnant women for thyroid dysfunction.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe directed the Department of Endocrinology, SKIMS to issue official recommendations to the concerned Heads of Departments at SKIMS and SKIMS Medical College.

Prof. Riyaz Misgar from the Department of Endocrinology and other medical experts provided in-depth insights into the spectrum of thyroid diseases. Scientific sessions covered a range of topics, with a particular focus on congenital hypothyroidism and thyroid disorders during pregnancy. Presenters shared alarming data predicting a rise in hypothyroidism among newborns and stressed the need for early screening, balanced diets, and regular physical activity.

The program witnessed active participation from specialists in pediatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, medical students, and the general public.(KNS)
