"Heroin use rising among youth, warning for society; Religious leaders joining movement to energise community awareness; Will extend drug-free model to every district of Kashmir; Society must back medical institutions fighting addiction crisis"
Srinagar, Jan 3 (KNS): Expressing deep concern over the growing drug addiction crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, on Saturday said that the problem has tripled in the last three and a half years, with heroin consumption rapidly increasing among youth.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Drug De-Addiction Awareness Programme at IMHANS, Garg said that addiction has become a major social challenge and a warning signal for the entire society.
“We have seen that drug addiction has become a big problem for all of us. This problem has multiplied three times in the last 3.5 years. The consumption of heroin is increasing among youth. This is a warning signal for society,” he said.
The Divisional Commissioner highlighted the seriousness of the campaign, saying that Chief Secretary J&K is personally monitoring the initiative, calling it one of the largest awareness drives in the valley.
He appreciated IMHANS for its work in training counsellors and spreading awareness in institutions.
“Counsellors are being trained in all health and educational institutions. Five-day training programmes are being held, supervised by Principal GMC Srinagar.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelSimilar training sessions will soon be organised in all districts of Kashmir,” he added.
Garg said that religious leaders in Srinagar are actively joining the movement, giving the campaign renewed energy. “All religious leaders of Srinagar are trying to join us in this struggle so they can inform society. Stakeholders from every section are coming forward to make this drug-free campaign stronger,” he further said.
He also said that IMHANS is providing helpline numbers and training volunteers on how to respond to distress calls. “Helpline numbers of IMHANS are being shared, and volunteers are being trained on how to assist callers effectively,” he said.
The Div Com said that the government infrastructure, social welfare, health, and district administration is available 24 hours for people battling addiction.
“Government services are available to our people 24×7. As a society, we all need to fight against this. We must encourage and support all medical institutions working on this issue,” he added.(KNS)
