Srinagar, Jan 7 (KNS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday that it would delay the announcement of bye-election schedules for Jammu & Kashmir due to heavy snowfall in the region. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated in a press conference that the elections for the Budgam and Nagrota constituencies would not be scheduled immediately, as the prevailing weather conditions pose logistical challenges.

The CEC emphasized that the Commission has until April 20 to conduct the bye-elections, in compliance with Section 151A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which mandates that any vacancy must be filled within six months.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The Budgam seat became vacant on October 21 when former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah resigned, while the Nagrota seat was left vacant following the death of Devinder Singh Rana on October 31. The ECI assured that the electoral exercise would proceed once conditions improve. (KNS)
