Srinagar, Aug 16 (KNS): The Election Commission of India is set to reveal the schedule for the forthcoming assembly elections during a press conference this Friday afternoon.
According to a media advisory issued by the Commission, the event will take place around 3 PM, though the specific states to be covered in the announcement have not been disclosed.
Several key states are approaching the end of their legislative assembly terms, including Haryana, whose tenure concludes on November 3, and Maharashtra, where the term ends on November 26.
The poll body has been gearing up for these elections, with its officials conducting visits to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir to assess preparedness. However, Maharashtra remains on the agenda for a future visit by the EC.
A significant aspect of the upcoming announcement revolves around Jammu and Kashmir, where the EC is under pressure to conduct the long-awaited assembly elections before the September 30 deadline, as directed by the Supreme Court.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The polls in the union territory have been a topic of considerable anticipation, with political leaders and citizens eager to restore democratic governance after the region's special status was revoked in 2019.
Recently, the EC reviewed poll readiness in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on ensuring security and logistical measures. There is growing political momentum in the region, with several parties, including the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, voicing their demands for fair and timely elections.
These elections if happened will mark the first since Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization into a union territory, making them crucial for the region’s political future.(KNS)
