Fierce Winds Wreak Havoc Across Kashmir, Disrupt Flights and Power Supply

Srinagar, Mar 29 (KNS): A powerful overnight windstorm battered Kashmir, causing extensive damage, widespread power outages, and the cancellation of 19 flights at Srinagar Airport.


The gale, which began last night and persisted through the day, uprooted trees, damaged boundary walls, and tore roofs off several houses. The worst impact was felt in Srinagar and North Kashmir, severely disrupting normal life.

In Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Budgam, strong winds brought down trees and power lines, leading to prolonged outages. A vehicle was completely crushed near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar when a tree fell on it. Meanwhile, in Dal Lake, tourists and locals had to be rescued amid the storm.

A Power Development Department (PDD) official stated that 90% of the affected areas have had their electricity restored, with teams working round the clock to fix the remaining damage.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelChief Engineer of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Aaquib S W Deva, confirmed that fallen trees and debris had caused extensive damage to power lines, affecting supply in multiple areas.

At Srinagar Airport, flight operations were severely hit, with 19 flights canceled due to strong winds reaching speeds of up to 27 knots. The disruption led to major delays and inconvenience for passengers.

According to Director Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, the weather is expected to remain dry until April 6, providing relief after the storm. (KNS)
