Former Judge Challenges Congress Stronghold in South Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 6 (KNS): In what was traditionally considered a stronghold of the Congress party in South Kashmir, a new political figure has emerged, posing a serious challenge to Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the party's seasoned leader. Mohammad Ashraf Malik, a retired principal district and sessions judge, entered the electoral scene as a candidate for the People's Democratic Party (PDP), delivering a hard-fought contest after just 21 days of campaigning.

Malik’s swift rise in Doru Shahabad constituency upset the political balance long held by Mir, a two-time minister and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary. Despite having limited time for campaigning, Malik's ability to connect with the electorate resonated deeply. His background in law and his clean judicial career helped gain trust among the voters.

In a constituency where the Congress traditionally had an upper hand, Malik’s entry prompted even Congress President Rahul Gandhi to step in, highlighting the intensity of the competition. Malik’s short but dynamic campaign focused on social media outreach and personal engagement, which drew support from various sections of society, including community leaders, traders, and first-time political participants.

Mohammad Ibrahim Bodha, Vice President of Central Jamia Masjid Doru Shahabad, noted, “When I learned of Malik’s entry into politics, I felt that our constituency would finally be represented by a versatile personality.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel" Similarly, Bashir Ahmed Wani, General Secretary of the Doru Trade Union, who had previously aligned with the National Conference, switched his support to Malik, seeing him as the better candidate.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Malik's campaign, Ghulam Ahmad Mir still drew on his years of political experience and connections to keep the contest close. His campaign centered on reminding voters of the development projects he had secured and his long-standing commitment to the region. However, voters, particularly younger ones, seemed attracted to Malik's fresh approach and focus on community engagement.

While Mir fought to consolidate his base, Malik's fiery speeches and ability to reach diverse voter groups posed a serious challenge to the Congress leader’s dominance. "Malik Ashraf gave a tough fight to Mir, despite being a newcomer," said Advocate Farooq Ahmed Ganai, a well-known socio-political activist from South Kashmir.

The election in Doru Shahabad marked a significant shift in the political dynamics of South Kashmir. Regardless of the outcome, Malik's campaign demonstrated the growing demand for change and the emergence of new political voices in a region traditionally dominated by seasoned politicians like Ghulam Ahmad Mir.(KNS)
