GDC Baramulla observes International Disability Day

 Baramulla, December 3(KNS): The Government Degree College for Boys, Baramulla, marked International Disability Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwDs) with the theme “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Organized by the Department of Psychology led by Dr. Kaiser Ahmad Dar (Head, Department of Psychology). The program sought to empower individuals with disabilities as active contributors to society. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Tariq Chalkoo (Head, Department of Physics), who emphasized fostering a mindset that recognizes individuals with disabilities as differently abled, calling for collective efforts to dismantle stereotypes and build an inclusive environment.

Key discussions, led by Dr. Zafar Iqbal, underscored the urgent need to address the shortage of professionals trained to cater to the needs of persons with disabilities. Dr. Iqbal highlighted the role of special education and announced plans by Composite Regional Centers (CRCs) to establish District-Level Development Centers, enhancing accessibility and support.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThe speakers also advocated for implementing provisions of the Disability Act and urged educational institutions to create inclusive proposals for better accommodation of individuals with disabilities.

The guest, introduced by Dr. Shar Ul Nisa Haroon and event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Aaliya Akhter, emphasized the necessity of shifting societal perceptions to recognize the unique abilities of individuals with disabilities.

Participants called for integrating persons with disabilities into all facets of life with dignity and equality. The program not only showcased the college’s commitment to inclusivity but also paved the way for actionable outcomes, including a focus on accessibility initiatives, policy implementation, and fostering leadership among individuals with disabilities to create an equitable future.
