Gen Upendra Dwivedi Takes Charge as New Army Chief

Srinagar, Jun 30 (KNS):Gen Upendra Dwivedi assumed command as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff on Sunday, following the retirement of Gen Manoj Pande.

According to KNS correspondent, before his role as Vice Chief starting February 19, Gen Dwivedi led the Northern Command from 2022 to 2024. He takes charge of the 1.3 million-strong Army at a critical time, with security challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Additionally, he will play a crucial role in coordinating with the Navy and Air Force on the government's plan to implement theatre commands.

An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984, and later commanded the unit. His nearly 40-year career includes diverse command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHis command roles span regiment (18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles), Brigade (26 Sector Assam Rifles), Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.

Gen Dwivedi's decorations include the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards.

As Northern Army Commander, he provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for sustained operations along the northern and western borders, as well as counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, reports said.

He also played a key role in ongoing negotiations with China regarding border issues and promoted the modernization and equipping of the Army's largest command, advocating for indigenous equipment under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reports added. (KNS).
