India to Open Title Defence Against USA

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially released the complete schedule for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Defending champions India will begin their title defence against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai, while the tournament will start earlier the same day with a clash between Pakistan and Netherlands in Colombo.
A total of 20 teams have been divided into four groups, with the top two from each group progressing to the Super Eight stage, followed by the semifinals and final. The final of the tournament will be played on March 8, either in Ahmedabad or Colombo, depending on Pakistan’s progress in the competition.
Flexible Venues for Knockouts
As per an agreement between the ICC and the host nations, special arrangements have been made for knockout matches. If Pakistan qualify for the semifinals and final, their matches will be held in Colombo. If they fail to reach the final, then the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the grand finale.
Similarly, semifinal venues will shift based on the qualification of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to ensure smooth hosting and fan convenience.
Group A: India and Pakistan Lead Strong Line-up
Group A features India, Pakistan, USA, Netherlands and Namibia. India and Pakistan are considered strong favourites, but the USA could once again prove dangerous after upsetting Pakistan in the previous edition. The much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash will take place on February 15 in Colombo.
Group B: Sri Lanka Face Tough Challenge

Group C: Heavyweights England and West Indies Together
Two-time champions England and West Indies share Group C along with Bangladesh, Nepal and debutants Italy. This group is expected to produce some thrilling encounters, especially clashes involving the three major cricketing nations.
Group D: The Group of Death
South Africa, Afghanistan and New Zealand headline Group D, which also includes Canada and UAE. Afghanistan, who impressed in the last edition, will look to continue their strong form against top-ranked sides.
Super Eight and Knockout Stage
The Super Eight stage will see the top teams battle for places in the semifinals. Based on ICC rankings, the seeded teams include India, England, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. If any of these teams fail to qualify, their spot will be taken by the next best-performing team.
The semifinals are scheduled for March 4 and March 5, while the final will be played on March 8 under lights, promising a grand conclusion to the global cricket spectacle.
