Srinagar, Aug 15 (KNS): Nalin Prabhat, IPS (AP: 1992), has been appointed as the new Director General of Jammu & Kashmir Police.
This appointment comes into effect following the retirement of the current DGP, R.R. Swain, IPS (AGMUT), on September 30, 2024.
Sources told KNS that Nalin Prabhat, who returns to the AGMUT cadre after a stint with the National Security Guard (NSG), will assume his role in Srinagar immediately.
Until Swain's retirement, Prabhat will serve as the Special Director General (DG) of J&K Police.
Prabhat brings a wealth of experience to the role, particularly from his previous postings in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Kashmir, where he gained substantial expertise in counter-terrorism operations.
He becomes the fifth non-J&K/AGMUT cadre IPS officer to be appointed as DGP J&K Police since the militancy outbreak in 1989, following notable predecessors J.N. Saksena, B.S. Bedi, Gurbachan Jagat, and Ashok Prasad.
Acknowledging the achievements of his predecessor, a senior J&K police officer praised R.R. Swain's tenure. "Swain has been a resolute officer dedicated to eradicating terror from within the system," the officer said. "His leadership in countering terror financing, narco-terrorism, and addressing internal threats has been commendable."
Swain, a 1991-batch IPS officer from the erstwhile J&K cadre now under AGMUT, was previously on central deputation with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for 15 years.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelUpon returning to J&K in 2020, a year after the abrogation of Article 370, he took up the role of Additional Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
His tenure also included sensitive positions such as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in various districts including Srinagar, Poonch, Leh, Ramban, and Jammu, as well as roles in the J&K Vigilance Commission.
Reflecting on Swain's contributions, another senior officer commented, "Swain’s policies, though often seen as tough, were essential for the Valley’s stability. His strategies to maintain peace post-Article 370 abrogation were crucial in keeping separatists and militants at bay."
The officer highlighted Swain’s deep understanding of the issues in J&K, attributing his return from RAW to his expertise in tackling local challenges. "Swain’s involvement in high-profile investigations, including terror funding cases and corruption within institutions, was pivotal in addressing systemic issues. His approach to cleaning up the system was a long-term solution for peace."
A committee formed under Swain’s leadership in July 2020 was instrumental in scrutinizing inputs against government employees, leading to several dismissals.
As Nalin Prabhat prepares to take over, the transition marks a new chapter for Jammu & Kashmir Police, with a focus on continuing the momentum established by Swain in ensuring security and stability in the region.(KNS)
