Srinagar, August 16 (KNS): The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced that the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly elections will be held in three phases, beginning on September 18. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar shared the details during a press briefing, highlighting the importance of the upcoming elections in re-establishing democratic processes in the region.
The polling dates are set as follows:
Phase 1: September 18
Phase 2: September 25
Phase 3: October 1
The counting of votes will take place on October 4, concluding the election process.
Kumar emphasized the significance of these elections, stating, "The upcoming assembly elections mark a pivotal moment for Jammu and Kashmir. We are committed to conducting a fair, peaceful, and democratic election that reflects the aspirations of the people." He further assured that the Election Commission would address security concerns raised by political parties to ensure the safety of all candidates.
The ECI also highlighted the success of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, noting how smoothly and peacefully the electoral process was carried out on a global scale.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelKumar praised the electorate of Jammu and Kashmir, where over 87.09 lakh voters are expected to participate across 90 assembly constituencies. This includes 42.6 lakh female voters and a notable increase in first-time and youth voters. The final voter list will be published on August 20.
To facilitate voting, over 11,000 polling stations will be set up across the region, including provisions for Kashmiri migrants. The Election Commission hopes for a high voter turnout, particularly from women and younger voters, in what Kumar described as a significant shift toward a peaceful and democratic future in the valley.
Reflecting on the shift away from violence, Kumar noted, "The valley has embraced democracy, choosing the power of the ballot over the force of the bullet. This election stands as a testament to the people's commitment to shaping a peaceful and prosperous future for Jammu and Kashmir."
