Bandipora, December 20 (KNS): The District President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has strongly appealed to the administration to lift the ban on stone quarries in Bandipora district, citing the severe economic and social impact on local communities.

In a statement issued to KNS, the District President expressed deep concern over the difficulties faced by hundreds of families who have been directly affected by the closure of these quarries.

“Stone quarries have long been a primary source of livelihood for many in Bandipora. For decades, families have depended on this sector to sustain themselves, and the sudden imposition of the ban has left them without an alternative source of income,” he said, adding that the ban has pushed many into financial distress.

The ban was reportedly implemented due to environmental and regulatory concerns, but it has sparked widespread discontent. Local workers, including labourers, truck drivers, and small-scale contractors, have lost their jobs and are struggling to support their families.

The District President emphasized the importance of balancing environmental conservation with the welfare of local communities. “While environmental protection is important, it should not come at the expense of people's livelihoods. Sustainable quarrying practices can be introduced to address both concerns,” he suggested.

Criticizing the administration’s lack of alternative employment opportunities, he further remarked, “The government is responsible for ensuring that its policies do not lead to mass unemployment.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThe absence of a rehabilitation plan reflects a lack of foresight.”

He also highlighted the broader economic consequences of the ban, pointing to the construction industry's struggles due to a shortage of raw materials like stone and gravel. This has led to increased costs for construction projects, adding further strain to the local economy.

The JKPCC leader called on the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister Omer Abdullah to urgently address the issue. “We urge the government to engage with stakeholders—quarry owners, workers, and environmental experts—to find a practical solution. Lifting the ban with strict sustainability guidelines could revive the sector and bring relief to affected families,” he said.

Local residents and community leaders have rallied in support of the District President’s demand, calling for public meetings to bring attention to the issue. As the situation evolves, the affected families hope their voices will be heard and that the government will act swiftly to restore their livelihoods.

In closing, the District President assured the public of his continued efforts. “The Congress party stands with the people of Bandipora, and we will keep raising this issue until justice is delivered,” he affirmed.

The call to lift the ban has highlighted the need for a balanced development approach that considers both environmental sustainability and the economic well-being of local communities. (KNS)
