Srinagar, Feb 08 (KNS): Mohammad Khurshid Alam, General Secretary of the J&K Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly condemned the house arrest of PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter Iltija Mufti, calling it a “ruthless misuse of power.”
Alam criticized the move to prevent Mehbooba Mufti from offering condolences to the family of Waseem Mir in Sopore, describing it as both “unjust and inhumane.”
“The administration is openly silencing opposition voices,” Alam stated. He also revealed that Rafiq Ahmad, PDP’s District President for Baramulla, has been detained, raising grave concerns about the government’s treatment of opposition leaders.
Alam emphasized that such actions are part of a broader strategy to suppress political engagement in Kashmir.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“These undemocratic measures reveal the true nature of governance in the region. Now, even grief is being policed,” he added.
“The administration has no justification for these arrests. Preventing leaders from reaching out to the victims’ families only highlights their admission of guilt,” Alam remarked, calling for immediate accountability and an end to what he termed the “crackdown on democracy.”
The detentions come in the wake of public outrage over two recent civilian deaths—truck driver Waseem Mir, who was allegedly shot by the army in Sopore, and 25-year-old Makhan Din from Kathua, who reportedly died under custodial torture. Mehbooba Mufti has demanded independent investigations into both cases.(KNS)
