Calls for integration of modern sciences into Kashmiri to prevent language decline

Anantnag, Oct 25(KNS): Renowned scholar and professor Shafiq Shouq said on Thursday that technology and modern sciences play a crucial role in preserving languages, especially Kashmiri.

Speaking to KNS at a function in Anantnag, Shouq stated that in today’s digital age, languages that do not keep up with technological advancements are at risk of disappearing.

He highlighted the importance of learning to use keyboards, understanding computers, and ensuring that knowledge platforms like Wikipedia and Google provide support in Kashmiri to help keep the language alive.

Professor Shouq also addressed some misunderstandings about certain words in the Kashmiri language. He clarified the meaning of the word "Gros," which some mistakenly take as an insult. He explained that the revered Kashmiri saint, Sheikh ul-Alam Sheikh Noor ud-Din Wali, proudly used the word "Gros" to reflect his strong connection with nature and hard work.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Shouq highlighted that if this word was a point of pride for the saint, it should be seen positively in modern times as well.

In addition, Professor Shouq spoke about his efforts to bring modern sciences into Kashmiri literature. He referred to his extensive work, Koshur Lagaar, a 1,400-page book that he personally typed and published. The book is now in its fourth edition and has gained recognition worldwide.

In response to a question, he said, "Whoever brings modern sciences into the Kashmiri language, if anyone manages to do so, we will praise them and say 'well done' for fulfilling their duty."

"Even if some people are not happy with me, the truth is that if everyone remains passive, today’s teachers will retire, and this effort will not continue." (KNS)
