Srinagar, August 13 (KNS): Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday voiced deep concern over the rising drug addiction and suicide rates in Kashmir, attributing these issues to various social, economic, and political factors.
He emphasized the need for a collective response involving the community, religious leaders, and the government to address these challenges effectively.
"Drug addiction and suicide rates are rising in our society. We must address the stigma around addiction, treat those who are suffering, and take strict action against those involved in the drug trade," Mirwaiz Umar told reporters here at Srinagar.
He called attention to the social stigma that prevents many from seeking help for their loved ones and urged society to "hate the sin, not the sinner."
Mirwaiz Umar also highlighted the severe unemployment crisis in Jammu and Kashmir, noting that the region has a 24% unemployment rate, compared to the 6-7% national average.
"For the past five years, there have been no jobs.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThere is no work for the youth, no incentives, and even those employed are being fired. The government has failed to fulfill its responsibilities," he said.
He further pointed out the significant economic decline, urging the private sector to step in to support the youth who are striving to create their own livelihood.
"Our youth are trying to stand on their own feet, creating their own resources, and launching local and international brands. But the government needs to take more interest in how these drugs are entering and spreading in our community," he added.
Addressing parents and families directly, Mirwaiz Umar stressed the importance of monitoring their children’s activities and being involved in their lives.
"It is not just about education. We must also focus on religious, moral, and social matters. Our imams, mosques, NGOs, and community committees must unite to fight this pandemic. Together, we can save Kashmir from this crisis," he concluded.(KNS)
