National Science Conference 2025 Concludes at GDC Women’s College Sopore

Sopore, Nov. 13 (KNS):  The Government Degree College for Women in Sopore successfully hosted a two-day National Science Conference on November 12th and 13th, 2025. The conference convened researchers, scientists, and students to explore groundbreaking developments in Climate Science, Biomedical Research, and Epigenetics.

The inaugural session commenced at 11:00 AM with Mr. Irshad Rasool Kar, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sopore, presiding as the Chief Guest. The event was attended by a distinguished gathering of dignitaries, including the College Principal, Prof. Subeena Chilloo; Mr. Shabir Ahmad Raina, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Sopore; Mr. Iftikhar Talib, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sopore; Prof. Aijaz Hakak, Principal of Amar Singh College; and Prof. Maryam Sarwat from Amity University, Noida.

The proceedings began with the National Anthem and a traditional Izbandh ceremony, followed by a performance of the college Tarana by students. Prof. Zubair Sayeed Masoodi, Head of the Department of Computer Applications, meticulously moderated the session.

In her welcome address, Principal Prof. Subeena Chilloo formally welcomed the guests and underscored the importance of such academic gatherings for both students and faculty. She commended the Organizing Secretary, Dr. Jaffar Bhat, and his team for their efforts, assuring that the institution would continue to host similar events in the future.

The keynote addresses highlighted the conference's core themes. Prof. Aijaz Hakak spoke on climate resilience, emphasizing the urgent need to protect water bodies and the environment, invoking the principle "An Posh Tel Yel Van Posh" (protect the water sources and the forests will flourish). Dr. Jaffar Bhat, the Organizing Secretary, elaborated on the conference's objectives, acknowledging his committee's work and drawing connections between basic and applied science.

Prof. Maryam Sarwat praised the conference's focus on collaboration and knowledge dissemination. Mr. Shabir Raina, ADC Sopore, thanked the organizers for prioritizing the critical issue of climate resilience. Iftikhar Talib, SSP Sopore, appreciated the college for creating a platform where the scientific community could converge to address community-centric priorities. The Chief Guest, Mr. Irshad Rasool Kar, MLA, commended the college's achievements and pledged his full support for its development, particularly for the construction of a new auditorium block.

Following the inaugural session, the dignitaries, accompanied by the Principal, inaugurated the college's new RFID-based library. College Librarian Ms. Nusrat Jabeen Khan delivered a detailed presentation on the system's functioning and benefits, which was highly appreciated for its potential to provide easy and efficient access to educational resources.

Session I, chaired by Dr. Syed Sajad, focused on "Epigenetic Regulation." The keynote was delivered by Dr. Altaf Bhat of the University of Kashmir, with a special online talk by Dr. Syed Mubarak Hussain from the University of New Mexico, USA.

·Session II, chaired by Dr. Saleem Farooq, explored "Natural Products: Therapeutic Potential & Drug Discovery." The keynote was presented by Dr. Syed Sajad Hussain, with research papers presented by scholars from Amity University, GDC Bandipora, and other institutions.

Session III, chaired by Dr. Shaista Qadir, addressed "Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture." The keynote was delivered by Prof. Farooq A. Lone from SKAUST-K, Shalimar.

The valedictory session was graced by Prof. Ab Rashid Malik, Principal of GDC Kupwara; Prof. Mohammad Shafi, Principal of GDC Boys Baramulla; and Prof. Mariyam Sarwat. Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Tantary, Member Secretary of the conference, presented a comprehensive report of the two-day proceedings. A formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Parvaiz Ahamd Dar, Head of the Department of Physics, while Dr. Aadil Mohi UD Din Sheikh, Head of the Department of Kashmiri, conducted the session.

The conference's technical operations were seamlessly managed by Mr. Majid and Mr. Afaq under the supervision of Dr. Khalid Bashir.(KNS)
