Srinagar, Dec 29 (KNS): Following the recent heavy snowfall in Kashmir, electricity demand and supply data have highlighted the challenges faced by the Power Development Department (KPDCL) and their efforts to restore power. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah shared detailed data comparing December 28 and 29, showing the extent of the disruption and recovery.
The data shared by CM reveals that on December 28, the region faced severe power outages in the early hours, with supply dropping to as low as 523 MW at 6 AM against a projected demand of 1,845 MW. However, the situation improved steadily, with supply nearing demand by evening. By December 29, supply had recovered significantly, with actual drawal meeting or exceeding demand in the early hours, though an unexplained disruption left supply at zero after noon.
Commending KPDCL's efforts, Omar Abdullah posted on X:
"The Power Department did a remarkable job dealing with the outages caused by the recent snowfall in the valley.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThese numbers tell the complete story. The supply of electricity dipped drastically between the hours of 4 AM & 10 AM as the system was hit by the snow. From 10 AM, the demand starts recovering as the system was brought back online & the damage repaired. Kudos to @kpdclofficial for their work on the ground.
Similarly, the work done by the R&B department to clear the snow from the roads and lanes was also a job well done. They moved quickly to open the main roads & then as per the schedule of priority continued their efforts. Today the focus has been on smaller roads & inner lanes.”
The snowfall caused significant damage to power infrastructure, including transmission lines and substations, but KPDCL’s quick response was instrumental in restoring normalcy. Abdullah’s appreciation extends to the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department for their coordinated efforts to clear snow and ensure mobility in the region. (KNS)
