Ghulam Ahmad Kumar,prominent philanthropist and social worker left this world on Monday 27 May 2024 leaving behind thousandsof his nears and dears. Born in village Wadipora of Handwara he was popularly known as Kumar sahab. His endless service stand as a testament to the power of human compassion and dedication. As the founder and guiding force behind Gulistan-e-Banat (Orphanage for girls) in Handwara working under Jammu and Kashmir Yateem Trust, Kumarsahab has profoundly impacted the lives of countless orphans and underprivileged individuals in the remote areas of Handwara. Ghulam Ahmad Kumar from a young age, was acutely aware of the hardships faced by many in his community, particularly orphans and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This awareness soon transformed into a deep-seated desire to bring about positive change.Driven by his unwavering commitment to social justice and humanitarianism, Kumarsahabwith the support of Jammu & Kashmir Yateem Trust establishedGulistan-e-Banat (garden of daughters), orphanage for girls in Handwara town which provide them shelter, food, education and a hopeful future. This orphanage for the girls is run by Jammu & Kashmir Yateem Trust (JKYT), charitable organisation founded in 1973.In 1998 Kumar Sahab retired as vice-principal of Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Handwara and after retirement, he devoted himself as a worker of JKYT.He was one of the seven permanent trustees of JKYT, never received any remuneration for his work. KumarSahab,acted as anadministrator of this unit,Gulshan-e-Banat at Handwara.The mission of the Jammu and Kashmir Yateem Trust is to foster an environment where orphans and the underprivileged can thrive and achieve their full potential. Recognizing the transformative power of education, Kumarsahab has prioritized educationalinitiatives. The Trust runs/provides scholarships to underprivileged children, ensuring they receive quality education and have the chance to break the cycle of poverty. He was himself a great teacher of his times and knew value of the education. In times of natural disasters or in emergences the Trust has been at the forefront of providing emergency relief. Under Kumar's guidance, the organization has mobilized resources and volunteers to deliver aid to affected communities, showcasing a remarkable capacity for rapid and effective response.
