KATRA, Nov 26 (KNS): A four-day-long protest against the proposed ropeway project along the Mata Vaishno Devi track was suspended after talks between local stakeholders and government officials, including Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
The protest, led by shopkeepers, labourers, and other affected groups, had started on November 22, with demands for the cancellation of the project or compensation for those impacted by it.
Deputy Commissioner Reasi, Vishesh Mahajan, assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed. "We are confident that through dialogue and mutual respect, a solution can be found that satisfies all parties involved," Mahajan said. The protesters agreed to suspend the strike until December 15, pending further discussions.

The situation was brought under control after the deployment of additional forces.
Lt Governor Sinha, also the chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, assured that the concerns regarding job losses would be addressed. He emphasized, however, that there would be no compromise on development projects, including the Rs 250-crore ropeway, which is expected to be completed in two years. The project, aimed at improving pilgrim facilities, has sparked opposition due to potential impacts on local businesses and employment. (KNS)
