Rob Key Considers Stokes for England's ODI Revival

Srinagar March 7 (KNS): England's managing director, Rob Key, has indicated that Ben Stokes is a serious candidate for the ODI captaincy following Jos Buttler’s resignation. England’s disappointing 2025 Champions Trophy campaign, where they failed to win a match, has prompted a leadership shake-up.

Stokes, 33, has been a key figure in England’s success, playing a vital role in their World Cup triumphs. Though he has not featured in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, Key believes his leadership qualities make him an ideal choice.

"Ben Stokes is one of the best captains I’ve ever seen. It would be foolish not to consider him," Key said. "He’s an exceptional tactician and leader, someone who thrives under pressure and brings out the best in others.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel"

However, Key acknowledged the potential impact on Stokes’ workload, especially with his commitments as Test captain. He also highlighted how the 50-over format is now more aligned with Test cricket than T20s, making Stokes a natural fit.

Key also praised Harry Brook’s leadership potential, suggesting Stokes could help groom him for a future captaincy role. Brook, 26, has already led England in a white-ball series and is considered a long-term leader.

With England’s white-ball struggles continuing under Brendon McCullum, reuniting him with Stokes in ODIs could provide the stability the team needs. The decision on England’s next ODI captain is expected to be crucial in shaping their future.(KNS)
