Srinagar, Dec16(KNS): The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) at SKIMS has successfully performed a complex cardiac procedure, “Bentall’s Procedure with Replacement of Arch of Aorta,” on a 40-year-old male patient.
The patient was initially admitted to a peripheral hospital with symptoms of acute chest pain and headache. A CT scan conducted at the facility revealed acute aortic dissection, prompting an immediate referral to SKIMS. Further investigations at SKIMS confirmed that the patient’s condition involved acute aortic dissection affecting the Arch of Aorta and its branches, along with severe leakage of the Aortic Valve. The condition posed a 100% mortality risk if left untreated.
The surgical procedure, which lasted six hours, involved replacing the Aortic Valve, the Aorta, and blood vessels supplying the brain with an artificial Dacron tube graft.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelDuring the surgery, the patient was placed on cardiopulmonary bypass. Following the procedure, the patient was shifted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and extubated three hours later without any neurological or vascular complications. The patient has since recovered and been discharged.
The CVTS Department at SKIMS has been performing Bentall’s procedures for the past two years. The introduction of advanced equipment has allowed the department to undertake more complex procedures, including over 15 cases of Endovascular Stenting (EVAR and TEVAR) in the past year. Previously, patients had to travel outside the region for these treatments, but these services are now available locally at SKIMS.
The department acknowledged the support of Prof. Mohd. Ashraf Ganie, Director SKIMS & EOSG, and the contributions of other departments, including Cardiology and Anesthesiology, for their role in facilitating these procedures.(KNS).
