Supreme Court to Hear Pleas Challenging Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 Today

New Delhi, April 16 (KNS):The Supreme Court is set to hear multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, today at 2 p.m. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, will preside over the hearing, according to the apex court's official cause list.

The petitions contest recent amendments to the Waqf Act, 1995, passed by Parliament earlier this month. Several opposition leaders and civil rights groups have moved the court, arguing that the amendments infringe on fundamental rights and threaten the secular fabric of the Constitution.

In anticipation of the hearing, the Union government has filed a caveat to ensure it is heard before any stay is granted. Multiple BJP-ruled states — including Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Assam, and Uttarakhand — have also approached the court in support of the legislation.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The Congress party, which has termed the amendment as divisive and unconstitutional, has taken the matter to court. Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, in his petition, claimed the Act violates Articles 14, 25, 26, 29, and 300A of the Constitution. Similar petitions have been filed by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, AAP leader Amanatullah Khan, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), and several other organizations and individuals.

The government, meanwhile, insists the law aims to benefit underprivileged Muslims and does not interfere with Waqf properties. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju reiterated the Modi government's commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”.  (KNS)
