Year 2025: J&K solarises 7,800 govt buildings, saves ₹45 Cr annually

Jammu, Dec 30 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir has made a major stride in its clean energy transition by solarising 7,800 government buildings during the year 2025, generating 73 megawatts (MW) of renewable power and significantly reducing the burden on the public exchequer.

Commissioner Secretary, Science and Technology Department, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, said the initiative has picked up remarkable momentum in recent months, with 3,016 buildings solarised between August and December alone.

“This year so far, we have solarised 7,800 government buildings across Jammu and Kashmir, including offices, schools, hospitals, police stations and panchayat bhawans, generating 73 MW of clean energy,” Choudhary said.

He said the initiative is translating into annual savings of nearly ?45 crore for the government while helping avoid around 80,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, marking a significant contribution to climate action.

“The pace has accelerated considerably, demonstrating that public infrastructure can lead the clean energy transition while simultaneously creating fiscal space for developmental priorities,” he added.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Choudhary said the Union Territory has set an ambitious target of solarising 12,000 government buildings by March 2026, with the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) spearheading the implementation.

The Commissioner Secretary said the programme is aligned with the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and India’s national climate commitments.

“We are grateful to the teams at JAKEDA and all departments across the UT administration for their commitment and coordinated efforts in making this initiative a success,” he said.

The solarisation drive is being seen as one of the key governance and sustainability achievements of J&K in 2025, reinforcing the UT’s push towards clean, cost-effective and climate-resilient development.(KNS)
