Says final call has to be taken by Union Home Ministry

Srinagar, April 06: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has indicated possible revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the Kashmir valley, but simultaneously added the final decision has to be taken by Union Home Ministry.

“This law can be removed but the decision lies at Union Home Ministry. Once reports reach to the office of concerned ministry the call will be taken accordingly,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Singh during an interview with Network 18 on Friday said the circumstances have become such that AFSPA can be removed but whatever action has be taken in this regard will be taken by the home ministry.

Notably AFSPA grants sweeping powers to armed forces personnel in disturbed areas, allowing them to search, arrest, and open fire if deemed necessary for public order maintenance.

Last week Union Home Minister Amit Shah also hinted at the possible revocation of AFSPA from Jammu and Kashmir.

The Act was introduced in Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s amid perceived disturbances in several parts of the state, allowing defence forces to maintain peace. (KNS)
