Major breakthrough in Kashmir rail link project tomorrow

Srinagar, Dec 19 (KNS): Northern Railways is going to achieve a major breakthrough in Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project tunnel in Katra on Wednesday, official sources said here on Tuesday.

Sources told KNS that the breakthrough of this tunnel will mark the end of tunnelling in the project and with this all tunnel excavation will be completed in whole project

They said that the tunnel T-1 of the project located in Katra is the most significant challenging tunnel.

“The alignment of tunnel passes through Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) a geological structure in Himalayan region, characterised by dolomite formations that tends to seep water, posing a considerable risk during tunnelling,” he said.

He added that the geology of this tunnel was very poor and tunnelling was carried out very cautiously involving various technical challenge.

The 111 km long Katra-Banihal section once completed will connect Kashmir to the rest of the country with rail. (KNS)
