Srinagar, March 29 (KNS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood but emphasized that several parameters need to be assessed before taking the final decision.
Speaking at the Times Now Summit 2025, Shah reiterated the government’s stance but refrained from giving a specific timeline. “We have said from the beginning that statehood will be restored. However, for such a decision, we must assess several parameters,” he stated.
The Home Minister also highlighted the successful and peaceful conduct of last year’s assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a significant milestone in the region’s democratic process.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“For the first time in 40 years, an election was held in Kashmir without any incidents requiring re-polling. Not a single tear gas shell or bullet was fired, and 60 percent of the people exercised their right to vote,” he said.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the government has consistently maintained that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time. However, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified their demand for an early restoration, urging the Centre to expedite the process.
Shah’s latest statement suggests that while the government remains committed to its promise, it is carefully evaluating multiple factors before making a formal move towards statehood restoration. (KNS)
