MLA Handwara backs Kupwara MLA, questions bureaucratic role in Assembly; refers to Chief Secretary’s communication on statehood resolution
Srinagar, Sep 30 (KNS): Peoples Conference leader Sajad Gani Lone on Wednesday backed the Kupwara MLA and questioned the government’s approach towards elected representatives, saying administrative authority should not be used to undermine the role of legislators.
“If you want to show your power, show it to the Chief Secretary, not to the MLAs,” Lone said while intervening in the Assembly.
Lone said the issue was not limited to the treatment of one MLA and also referred to the recent controversy over communications from senior bureaucrats to Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather regarding the statehood resolution.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The Chief Secretary and Law Secretary had written to the Assembly Secretariat ahead of the debate on the resolution, arguing that the matter was sub judice and should not be taken up. The Assembly subsequently passed the resolution seeking restoration of J&K’s statehood.
Lone questioned the principle behind bureaucrats communicating with the Speaker on the business of the elected House, saying that if the administration wanted to exercise its authority, it should direct that authority towards the bureaucracy rather than elected legislators.(KNS)
