Srinagar, Sep 17 (KNS): In Jammu and Kashmir, 24 constituencies across seven districts are set to cast their votes for the first time in a decade as the region embarks on the first phase of assembly elections tomorrow.
This election holds particular significance as it is the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which led to the revocation of the region's special status and its reorganization into a Union Territory.
As per news agency KNS, over 23 lakh voters are expected to cast their ballots, deciding the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 independents, vying for 24 assembly segments.

The constituencies are spread across eight segments in three districts of the Jammu region and 16 segments in four districts of the Kashmir Valley. A total of 23,27,580 electors are eligible to participate in this first phase.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, in coordination with the Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) and the J&K Armed Police, have implemented robust security measures to ensure a safe and conducive environment for voters. Security arrangements have been bolstered with multi-tiered deployment of forces to facilitate a smooth electoral process and encourage voter turnout.

Polling parties have been equipped with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and other essential materials, ensuring that all stations are ready for the voters. “All polling parties were handed over EVMs and dispatched to their respective polling stations. We have ensured all essential facilities, such as drinking water, ramps, and wheelchairs, at each station to facilitate a smooth voting experience,” said an election official overseeing the preparations.

CAPF personnel have been strategically deployed across districts to maintain security and order throughout the voting process.
Strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct ensures that the election remains fair and free from undue influence.
Election officials are optimistic about a substantial voter turnout. "We are expecting a huge voter turnout," an official said, noting the various initiatives undertaken to motivate voter participation.

Special polling booths have been set up across all segments, including 'pink polling stations' manned by women officers, 'green stations' for persons with disabilities (PWDs), and dedicated polling stations in areas with a significant tribal population.
Voter outreach has been a key focus of election authorities. To maximize participation, they ensured 100% distribution of voter slips to eligible voters. This comprehensive effort to inform and engage the electorate aims to facilitate a smooth and inclusive voting experience. Election observers are on the ground, continuously monitoring the process to ensure its integrity and transparency.

In a special effort to cater to all demographics, arrangements were made for home voting. “We saw remarkable participation, with specially-abled and senior citizens casting their votes,” an official remarked, highlighting the inclusive nature of this electoral exercise.
The upcoming polling day marks a historic and crucial moment for Jammu and Kashmir as its residents once again exercise their democratic right, with hopes high for a peaceful and participative electoral process.(KNS)
