Awareness Efforts Key to Increased Voter Turnout in Srinagar: DC Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 25 (KNS): Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohiuddin on Saturday said the awareness campaigns that have contributed to increased voter turnout in recent elections.

Speaking on the occasion of the 15th National Voters Day, he highlighted the efforts made to educate citizens and encourage their participation in the electoral process.

Dr. Bilal stated that the year 2024 saw extensive electoral activity, including parliamentary and assembly elections, with a significant increase in voter turnout compared to previous years. He credited initiatives like the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaigns for their role in raising awareness and ensuring that citizens, especially young voters, understand the value of their vote.

“Our focus has been on young voters, and we have consistently conveyed the message that registering and exercising their right to vote is the most important way to strengthen democracy,” he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe pointed out that during the special summary revision in Srinagar, nearly 35,000 new voters were added, accounting for almost 50% of the total additions in Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Bilal also highlighted the improvement in the Elector-Population (EP) ratio, which has risen from 55 to over 60, attributing this progress to extensive outreach in schools and colleges. “We have established Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) in educational institutions to engage students through interactive programs and activities to emphasize the significance of voting,” he added.

The National Voters Day celebrations were held at various levels, including district, ERO, and BLO levels. A central event took place at the College of Education, where the Regional Commissioner of Kashmir served as the chief guest. Programs were conducted at 932 polling stations across Srinagar to encourage eligible citizens to participate in the democratic process. (KNS)
