Chillai Kalan begins in Kashmir, coldest days ahead

Srinagar, Dec 20 (KNS_: The coldest period of winter, Chillai Kalan, is set to begin in Kashmir on Saturday, December 23. This 40-day long phase is known for extremely low temperatures and heavy snowfall, which makes it the harshest part of winter in the region.

During Chillai Kalan, temperatures can drop below freezing, and the region often experiences its heaviest snowfall, especially in higher altitudes. The weather is expected to remain very cold, with the possibility of freezing of water bodies and a thick layer of frost on roads and fields. The cold wave often causes difficulties for people, especially those living in rural areas, but it is also an important time for the region's natural cycle, as the snow melts and provides water to crops and the local ecosystem in the spring.

According to meteorological reports, this year’s Chillai Kalan will begin with a cold wave, and temperatures are expected to dip significantly across the Kashmir Valley. The Meteorological Department has also predicted that there could be light to moderate snowfall in the coming days, especially in the higher reaches of the valley. The plains are likely to experience a drop in temperature, which may cause frost.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as wearing warm clothes and avoiding long exposure to the cold, especially during the early morning and late evening hours.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelFor those living in areas prone to heavy snowfall, it is important to be prepared for possible roadblocks or power outages.

Power supply, road clearance, and healthcare facilities are being prioritized to help people through the harsh conditions. Authorities have warned of the possibility of heavy snowfall in the coming weeks and have urged citizens to stay updated on weather forecasts.

Chillai Kalan marks the beginning of a three-part winter period. After 40 days, the next phase called Chillai Khurd (26 days) follows, and finally, the last phase, Chillai Bachha (20 days), brings the temperatures back to more moderate levels.
