Cloudbursts and Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in J&K; 3 Dead, Homes Destroyed, Highway Cut Off

Jammu, April 20 (KNS): Unrelenting rains, flash floods, and cloudbursts unleashed widespread destruction across parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, claiming three lives in Ramban district and leaving scores stranded as critical infrastructure crumbled under the onslaught.

The worst-hit was Seri Bagna village in Ramban, where a powerful cloudburst struck in the early hours of the morning. Among the deceased were two brothers—Aqib Ahmad and Mohd Saqib—who were caught in the sudden deluge. Rescue efforts are still underway at the site, with emergency teams navigating difficult terrain and continuous rainfall.

Flash floods also tore through Dharam Kund village, causing significant damage. Around 40 homes were impacted, with at least 10 completely flattened. Several vehicles were washed away as water gushed through residential areas, leaving a trail of destruction.

Emergency personnel, including police and disaster response teams, have so far rescued over 100 residents trapped by floodwaters. “The area is remote, and conditions are extremely challenging, but our teams are doing everything possible to reach those in need,” an official said.

In addition to the human toll, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway—a key artery connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India—was shut down after landslides hit nearly a dozen spots along its 250-km stretch.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelA portion of the road near Panthiyal was completely washed away, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.

Local authorities have described the damage in Ramban as "extensive." A senior district official emphasized that the focus remains on saving lives, with detailed damage assessments to be conducted once the immediate crisis is under control.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to lead a high-level review meeting later today to assess the situation and coordinate relief operations.

Union Minister and Udhampur MP Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the rapid response of the Ramban district administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary. “Despite the hailstorms, landslides, and high-velocity winds overnight, the timely action of the district team helped prevent further loss of life,” Singh said in a public statement.

He also assured that the central government would provide full support, including financial assistance and resources for recovery. “Our thoughts are with the families affected. Together, we will overcome this crisis,” he added.(KNS)
