Karnah Kupwara June 18 (KNS): Following the recent Pahalgam attack, heightened Indo-Pak tensions, and the success of Operation Sandur, the residents of Karnah valley faced delays in migrating to their traditional summer pastures (locally known as Bahaks). Due to security concerns, obtaining the required travel permits was challenging this year, resulting in an almost two-month delay for many families.
To alleviate the locals’ hardships, the Indian Army took a significant step by providing an alternate, easier route through the Kukwah Gali pass. Earlier, people had to traverse the difficult and treacherous Danna and Sadhna routes to reach their grazing grounds. The newly opened path not only shortens the distance but has also considerably reduced the difficulties faced by the nomadic families and shepherds.
Talking with Kashmir News Service (KNS) a local resident said , every year, by the end of May, the people of Karnah move with their livestock to various summer pastures such as Taya, Raghni, Ganadvi, Ismala, Tar, Loi Mast Bungus, TP, Moryan, and others, where they spend nearly four months during the summer season.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThis year, however, their migration was delayed.
Local civil society members and senior journalist Peerzada Saeed brought the issue to the attention of the Army authorities, who responded promptly by opening the alternate Kukwah Gali route. Grateful residents have expressed heartfelt thanks to the Army Commander and Deputy Commander for this timely intervention.
Locals had earlier feared that they might not be able to migrate to the pastures at all this year, but with the Army’s cooperation, they now feel hopeful. They have also urged the authorities to simplify the process of obtaining travel permits for Bahaks, so that such obstacles can be avoided in the future.(KNS)
