Dr. Sheikh Jamsheed Calls for Investigation into GMC’s Flood-Risk Relocation

Srinagar, Dec 17 (KNS): Prominent social and peace activist, Dr. Sheikh Jamsheed, has raised serious concerns about the relocation of the Government Medical College (GMC) in Kashmir to a flood-prone area. He questioned the lack of proper evaluation before the decision, particularly in an era of digital tools that could have easily assessed the site’s risks.

Dr. Sheikh highlighted that the construction of the GMC cost over 13 crore rupees, funds that belong to both the government and the public, and emphasized that such money should be spent wisely.
The activist called for the immediate recovery of the money spent on the relocation from the salaries of the officials who failed to assess the flood risks.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe also demanded a thorough investigation into the approvals given for the construction. "A team should be formed to investigate which officers allowed the construction without evaluating the area's vulnerability to floods," Dr. Sheikh said.

He further emphasized that if the GMC is relocated again, authorities must ensure that the new location is thoroughly evaluated for potential flood or landslide risks to prevent similar issues in the future. (KNS)
