Srinagar, September 22 (KNS): Director General of Police J&K, R R Swain on Sunday said that the fight against narcotics is coming back to life

According to KNS correspondent, DGP said that from January to July 2024, the police have secured 150 convictions, while 12 cases have been discharged. "This shows that despite challenges, we are making progress," he added.

He also said the data provided by the Chief Law Officer was a sign of confidence in the criminal justice administration. "This information gives us confidence and is a strong indicator that the system is not defunct," he said.

The DGP further said that the property seizure related to narcotics has increased significantly in the last year. "Property seizure in narcotics-related cases has gone up by 40-45% in the past year," he added.

He also said that the value of properties seized has increased by 20%, further reflecting the police's commitment to curbing the narcotics trade. "This is not just about the number of properties; it’s about the value and impact of these seizures," he said.

He said the dedication of law enforcement officers in investigating and prosecuting drug-related crimes is commendable.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel"The hard work put in by officers in collecting evidence, recording witness statements, and presenting the case in court deserves recognition," he added.

He said that a case in Kupwara resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for two persons caught with 15 packets of heroin, which was the result of thorough investigations.

The witness system is one of our biggest weaknesses. This gap in the system needs urgent attention, especially when witnesses are reluctant to testify, DGP said, adding that if witnesses do not speak the truth, it delays and hinders the entire justice process," he said.

He also said that despite the challenges in the criminal justice system, police officers continue to work tirelessly, even after retirement. "Retired officers still come forward to assist in cases, showing their commitment to justice," he added.

He said that the fight against narcotics will continue with full force. "We are following these cases aggressively and will keep challenging the ones where convictions are not secured," he said.

The department is determined to reach logical conclusions in all narcotics-related cases to ensure that justice is served, he added.(KNS)
