Gilsar–Khushalsar Need Fast-Tracked Conservation Measures, Urges NLCO

Srinagar, Nov 6 (KNS) : The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) has urged the administration to expedite comprehensive conservation measures for the twin urban lakes — Gilsar and Khushalsar — citing the urgent need for enhanced manpower, machinery, and scientific intervention to prevent further degradation.

In a statement issued today, NLCO Chairman Manzoor Wangnoo expressed concern over the slow pace of ongoing restoration activities and called for administration to ensure that focused and coordinated action is taken on the ground.

Wangnoo said, “The Gilsar–Khushalsar twin lakes are at a critical ecological juncture. While the LCMA is making some efforts, the magnitude of the problem demands a fast-tracked, well-equipped approach. More dredging machines, dumpers, and dedicated manpower are essential to sustain and scale up the cleaning operations.”

He further noted that the NLCO had earlier submitted a detailed memorandum to the administration outlining key recommendations including scientific dredging, proper muck disposal, sewage diversion, and prevention of encroachments around the peripheries.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Wangnoo emphasized that the mission is not just about cleaning the lakes but reviving an entire ecosystem that supports Srinagar’s hydrology, heritage, and urban health. “Mission Ehsaas, which was lauded by the Prime Minister in Mann Ki Baat and inaugurated by the Lieutenant Governor, stands as a symbol of people’s partnership in conservation. To preserve its impact, immediate administrative reinforcement is crucial,” he added.

The NLCO reiterated its commitment to continue assisting the Lakes Conservation & Management Authority (LCMA) and other departments in all ongoing efforts, while also urging the administration to deploy additional resources and ensure regular monitoring for sustained results.

“Timely action can turn Gilsar–Khushalsar into a success story of urban ecological revival,” Wangnoo said.(KNS)
