Srinagar, Jan 11 (KNS): Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has strongly refuted recent media reports suggesting an increase in the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) at Government Lal Ded (LD) Hospital. According to GMC authorities, the NMR at LD Hospital for 2024 stands at 9.9 per 1,000 live births, significantly lower than the national average, which currently ranges between 17-21 per 1,000 live births.
The clarification comes in response to misleading reports claiming a rise in the mortality rate. GMC officials emphasized that while neonatal mortality is a complex issue, the NMR at LD Hospital has actually been reduced through the use of advanced medical treatments. These efforts have ensured that the hospital's neonatal mortality rate remains well below the national average, demonstrating the success of the healthcare measures in place.
In 2024, LD Hospital recorded a total of 29,939 live births, with 3,107 neonatal inpatient admissions. Of these, 297 neonatal deaths occurred, which resulted in an NMR of 9.9 per 1,000. This is in line with the Millennium Development Goal to reduce NMR to 12 per 1,000 live births. The hospital’s success in maintaining a low NMR is attributed to its state-of-the-art medical infrastructure and a team of skilled healthcare professionals.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
It is important to note that some patients requiring early pregnancy termination—either for maternal health reasons or fetal conditions—are referred to LD Hospital. This contributes to higher neonatal admissions and, at times, increased mortality. However, even with these challenges, the hospital has managed to maintain an NMR well below the national average.
LD Hospital, with 710 beds, is the primary maternity and neonatal care center for the region. It serves not only Srinagar but also the surrounding districts of Ramban, Doda, Rajouri, Kishtwar, and the Union Territory of Ladakh. The hospital continues to be a crucial resource for improving neonatal healthcare in the region, supported by advanced equipment such as ventilators, CPAP machines, and an oxygen plant that ensures a steady supply of oxygen for critical care.
The GMC Srinagar remains committed to providing high-quality healthcare and improving neonatal health outcomes across the region.(KNS)
