New Delhi, Jan 11 (KNS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday underscored the urgent need for a relentless crackdown on drug trafficking, warning that failure to act decisively now could lead to irreversible consequences in the next decade.
Addressing a regional conference on Drug Trafficking and National Security, Shah stressed that India's future depends on eliminating the drug menace. He called for aggressive action against traffickers while ensuring a rehabilitative approach for addicts.
The Home Minister revealed that in the next 14 days, authorities will incinerate over 44,792 kg of seized narcotics worth Rs 2,411 crore, as part of a nationwide drive. Since 2014, enforcement agencies have seized 24 lakh kg of drugs valued at over Rs 56,000 crore, a sign of intensified efforts rather than rising drug consumption, he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Shah urged state governments to seize properties of drug traffickers and expedite legal proceedings through special NDPS courts. He emphasized strengthening forensic labs, increasing inter-agency coordination, and leveraging technology for better enforcement.
Highlighting narco-terrorism as a grave national security threat, Shah called for thorough financial investigations to dismantle global drug networks linked to terror outfits. He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a drug-free India by 2047 under the Nasha Mukt Bharat initiative.
The Union Home Minister also stressed district-level monitoring, urging police chiefs to make regions drug-free and ensure strict prosecution of traffickers. This fight cannot be delayed, he asserted. (KNS)
