Kashmir Fruit Growers Disappointed Over Vande Bharat Route, Seek Direct Connectivity to Delhi

Srinagar, Jan 10 (KNS): The Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union, an elected umbrella body representing fruit growers from across the Valley, has expressed disappointment over the recently announced route of the Vande Bharat Express. While initially expected to connect Srinagar directly with New Delhi, the train is now scheduled to operate only between Katra and Srinagar, leaving fruit growers and traders dissatisfied.

The Union, which includes associations from Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla, Handwara, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag, and other districts, had high hopes that the Vande Bharat Express would resolve logistical challenges, boost economic growth, and support the horticulture sector by enabling direct transport of fresh produce to Delhi. However, they now feel that the revised route fails to serve their needs, as passengers and cargo must transfer at Katra before reaching Delhi.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Although the Union welcomed the Katra-Srinagar rail connectivity and the upcoming inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel on January 13, they emphasized that without direct rail connectivity to Delhi, the transportation of fresh fruits and vegetables remains inefficient. They also expressed disappointment over the absence of a dedicated goods train for perishable items.

In light of these concerns, the Union has urged the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister, and the Chief Secretary to take up the matter with the Ministry of Railways, seeking direct Vande Bharat Express services between Srinagar and Delhi. They believe such a move would not only benefit traders but also enhance economic opportunities for the entire region. (KNS)
